In Egypt, Ain Shams' Al-Alsun celebrates four terms of successful work on Wikipedia

Students, ambassadors and professors celebrate as they wrap up the fourth term on Wikipedia.

Two years ago the Wikipedia Education program had its first inception in the Arab world with Egypt’s Cairo Pilot. With such a large number of Arabic speakers (530 million primary and secondary speakers) Arabic Wikipedia needed more support to follow its sister versions of the encyclopedia that have more contributors with fewer native speakers. The Arabic Wikipedia today has about 280,000 articles while the Dutch Wikipedia, for instance, has 1.7 million articles with only 27 million native speakers. Every day thousands of Arabic users visit Wikipedia and many of them edit articles. Unfortunately, most of the new pages and edits created by new users are vandalism and not valid entries. Arabic Wikipedia needed a trusted source to recruit new volunteer editors. This was one of the reasons for launching the education program. The faculty of languages (Al-Alsun) at Ain Shams University joined the program as one of the first three participating institutions. During the first term, Egyptian students contributed 1.1 million bytes of information to the Arabic Wikipedia and created more than a hundred articles, three of them were featured articles. Now, Al-Alsun is still having incredible results, adding 7 million bytes in the fall 2013 term alone!

Everyone is happy with the the amount of female participation and the role they played in helping bridge the gender gap.

About forty students, ambassadors and professors of the Al-Alsun college gathered to celebrate the achievements they had during their fourth term in the program. Dr. Karma Sami, the vice dean of Al-Alsun, opened the celebration with a word about the importance of supporting such initiatives to enrich free content on the internet. The professors supervising the program, Dr. Dalia El-Toukhy, Dr. Radwa Kotait and Dr. Iman Galal followed Dr. Sami with words encouraging their students to continue editing Wikipedia. I had a short presentation about the term results. Students have created more than 2,400 new articles in six months. The average number of active editors jumped to 36 editors/month. Having open discussions about content quality will help us achieve new goals as we continue to grow. It is encouraging to see more than forty featured articles created by students.

Every term the program brings new active editors to Wikipedia who gradually become “Wiki-addicted.” “I love the thought that somewhere somebody needed a piece of information badly, and then he/she found it and became happy.” Reem says.
Reem Alkashif is a post-graduate student who first edited Wikipedia when Dr. Radwa Kotait selected her to join her translation course in the Wikipedia Education Program. Reem was one of the students with extraordinary contributions during her first semester in the program, she has created new articles including featured articles about the 1972 book about slavery in the American South, The Slave Community, and an article on the History of Mars Observation. Reem continued editing the Arabic Wikipedia, becoming a campus ambassador in an effort to share what she has learned with her fellow students.

Like Reem, Amal Abdel-Wahabs had her first editing experience with Wikipedia during the education program. Amal recently joined the program and worked on translating articles from English to Arabic. “Wikipedia always represents the fast source of information when I am in need to write about anything.” Amal says, “But with the Education Program, I was able to enter this world, to contribute and to improve the quality of my works and others’ objectively.” In this very short period Amal has created 155 new stub articles on the Arabic Wikipedia and developed an article about Singapore strategy which is now nominated to be a featured article. Among the articles Amal has created, she feels most proud about the Lizzie Velásquez article. Last month this article was visited 955 times. “Although it is a nine kilobyte article, it means a lot to me. I like that it’s me who translated an article of such an inspirational girl and introduced it through Wikipedia,” Amal says.
In two years, Al-Alsun students were an example of dedication to the contribution of high quality content on Wikipedia, a bright image that other scholars and education institutes should look forward to emulating.

كلية الألسن في مصر تحتفل بأربعة فصول دراسية ناجحة على ويكيبيديا

الطلاب والسفراء والأساتذة يحتفلون بانتهاء نسختهم الرابعة على ويكيبيديا

منذ عامين، شق برنامج ويكيبيديا للتعليم طريقه للعالم العربي من خلال برنامج القاهرة التجريبي. فرغم العدد الضخم لمستخدمي اللغة العربية (530 مليون) كانت الموسوعة العربية بحاجة لمزيد من الدعم لتلحق بزميلاتها باللغات الأخرى تلك التي تحظى بحجم أكبر مع عدد متحدثين أقل باللغة الأم. ويكيبيديا العربية اليوم بها حوالي 280 ألف مقالة في حين تحظى النسخة الهولندية – على سبيل المثال – بمليون و700 ألف مقالة مع عدد متحدثين لا يتخطى 27 مليونًا. يزور ويكيبيديا يوميًا آلاف المستخدمين العرب ويحرر الكثير منهم مقالاتها، ولكن للأسف معظم الصفحات التي يُنشئها مستخدمون جدد والتعديلات التي يقومون بها تكون تعديلات تخريبية، وبالتالي تُعد تعديلات غير صالحة. كانت ويكيبيديا بحاجة إلى مصدر موثوق وأكاديمي لتجنيد محررين متطوعين جدد من خلاله، وكان هذا أحد أسباب بدأ برنامج التعليم. كلية الألسن انضمت لبرنامج التعليم حيث كانت واحدة من أول ثلاث مؤسسات تعليمية مشاركة، وخلال الفصل الدراسي الأول أضاف الطلاب المصريون 1.1 مليون بايت إلى الموسوعة العربية وأنشأوا ما يزيد على مائة مقالة، كانت 3 منها مقالات مميزة، وكانت هذه بداية طيبة. والآن، ما زالت الألسن تحظى بنتائج مذهلة؛ حيث أضافت 7 مليون بايت خلال الفصل الدراسي السابق (خريف 2013) فقط!

الكل سعيد بالمشاركة النسائية ودور الطالبات في سد الفجوة بين الجنسين

اجتمع حوالي 40 طالبًا، وسفيرًا، وأستاذًا للبرنامج في كلية الألسن للاحتفال بما أنجزوه خلال الفصل الدراسي الرابع من هذه المبادرة. افتتحت د. كرمة سامي، وكيل الكلية الاحتفالية بكلمة عن أهمية دعم مثل هذه المبادرات لإثراء المحتوى الحر على الإنترنت. وتابع الأساتذة المشاركون، د. داليا الطوخين ود. رضوى قطيط، ود. إيمان جلال بكلمات لتشجيع الطلاب على الاستمرار في تحرير ويكيبيديا. وكان لي عرض سريع عن نتائج البرنامج؛ فقد أنشأ الطلاب أكثر 2,400 مقالة جديدة في 6 أشهر، وارتفع معدل المحررين النشطين إلى 36 محرر/ للشهر الواحد، والحديث عن الجودة سيأخذنا إلى إنجاز جديد حققه الطلاب حيث طورواأكثر من 40 مقالة متميزة وجيدة جديدة مما يعني حوالي 10% من المحتوى المميز على ويكيبيديا العربية.

ريم الكاشف

في كل فصل دراسي يأت البرنامج إلى ويكيبيديا بمحررين نشطين يدمنون الويكي مع الوقت. تقول ريم “أحببت فكرة أن شخصًا ما في مكان ما بحاجة ماسة إلى معلومة، ويصبح سعيدًا عندما يجدها”. ريم الكاشف هي طالبة دراسات عليا بدأت تحرير ويكيبيديا عندما اختارتها د. رضوى قطيط لتنضم إلى مجموعتها للترجمة ضمن برنامج التعليم، وكانت ريم واحدة من الطلاب المتميزين خلال فصلها الدراسي الأول بالبرنامج حيث أنشأت مقالات جديدة وطورت مقالات مختارة عن مجتمع العبيد (كتاب) وتاريخ رصد المريخ، واستمرت في تحرير ويكيبيديا حتى أصبحت سفيرة جامعة حتى تنقل لزملائها ما تعلمته وتنمي حب نشر المعرفة الحرة بداخلهم.
أمل عبد الوهاب بدأت تجربتها في تحرير ويكيبيديا من خلال برنامج التعليم، وانضمت أمل لويكيبيديا وللبرنامج مؤخرًا في الفصل الدراسي السابق حيث عملت على ترجمة مقالات من الإنجليزية للعربية. تقول أمل “ويكيبيديا تُمثل المصدر السريع للمعلومات عندما أرغب في الكتابة عن أي شيء، ولكن مع برنامج التعليم دخلت إلى هذا العالم لأساهم وأطور من جودة أعمالي وأعمال الآخرين بموضوعية.” في هذه الفترة القصيرة أنشأت أمل 155 بذرة مقالة وأنشأت وطورت مقالة عن استراتيجية سنغافورة وهي الآن مُرشحة لتكون مختارة، ومن بين المقالات التي أنشأتها أمل تفخر بمقالة عن ليزي فلاسكويز. وقد حققت هذه المقالة خلال الشهر الماضي فقط 955 زيارة. تقول أمل “على الرغم من كونها مقالة صغيرة حجمها 9 كيلوبايت، فهي تعني لي الكثير، أحب كوني أنا من ترجمت مقالة عن هذه الشخصية الملهمة وقدمتها من خلال ويكيبيديا.”
خلال عامين، قدم طلاب الألسن مثلا من النشاط والتفان في تقديم محتوى مميز إلى ويكيبيديا. صورة مشرقة ينبغي أن تتطلع مؤسسات التعليم وأفرادها إلى تحقيق مثلها.
