On Saturday, April 29, we learned that the Turkish Internet Regulator (ICTA) implemented a block of all language versions of Wikipedia in Turkey. Wikipedia is a global source of neutral, reliable information in hundreds of languages. If it remains, this block will result in millions of people in Turkey losing access to free knowledge about their country and the world around them. We believe knowledge is a fundamental human right, and urge the Turkish government to remove this block.
A dedicated community of volunteer editors write and maintain more than 40 million articles on Wikipedia. This global community has a powerful vision: a world where every single person can freely access the sum of all knowledge. Wikipedia represents a rich source of knowledge on a wide range of topics, from history to medicine to technology. The nearly 300,000 articles on Turkish Wikipedia also provide knowledge for millions of people about Turkey’s history, culture, and geography—written for Turkish speakers, by Turkish speakers.
Freedom of information is a foundation of free knowledge. For many people, Wikipedia is the most accessible source of reliable, neutral information in their language. It may contain content that some readers consider objectionable or offensive, but this alone should never be grounds for removal. We believe that everyone in the world has a fundamental right to freely share and access knowledge without fear of repercussions. We strongly oppose censorship or threats that lead to self-censorship.
The block occurred shortly following a notice on Friday, April 28 from the ICTA, requesting a URL-based block in Turkey of a number of articles on both English and Turkish Wikipedias.
A number of claims attributed to Turkish authorities in the press have suggested that Wikipedians have been part of a “smear campaign,” or created content “supporting terrorism.” We are deeply concerned by any suggestion that freely sharing the encyclopedia articles created by the worldwide volunteer editor community could be misconstrued as supporting a violent or hateful agenda. We believe there has been a misunderstanding. Wikipedia’s purpose is to share encyclopedic information with the world. At the Wikimedia Foundation, we unequivocally condemn and reject terrorism.
The Wikimedia Foundation calls on the Turkish government to restore full access to Wikipedia for the Turkish people, and empower them to once again share in the world’s largest free knowledge resource. We are currently considering appropriate ways to challenge this decision through the Turkish courts. We invite you to join us in calling on the Turkish government to respect the rights of their citizens and #UnblockWikipedia.
The Wikimedia Foundation does not set editorial policy for the Wikimedia projects. We respect and support the editorial decisions made by the community of editors around the world, including those of the Turkish Wikipedia community.
Katherine Maher, Executive Director
Wikimedia Foundation

Many thanks to all those at the WMF who have put forwards this statement. A very similar positions is also supported by a large number of those without our global movement. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Response_to_2017_ban_in_Turkey

Sad and disappointing what Turkey does. I fear it comes every day closer to the one opinion community. I hope Erdogan wakes up before it is really too late

The unbiased knowledge provided through Wikipedia needs to be available to everyone regardless of location.

I am from INDIA. I don’t know the adequate reason of blocking. But I support Wiki from long it has educated me where i required specially in Pharmaceuitcal knowledge it has huge collection data base of all drugs which we deals and gain more knowledge from Wiki. Turkish can loose its knowledge rights.

Mevzuya konu olan maddeleri kaldırdınız mı?

I want to “join you” in objecting to the Turkish block but don’t use twitter. Other ideas? Thank you

I am against the ban but I am sorry to see you cannot put the content in question here and explain that it is not a propaganda material as claimed. You can urge them but you should also check yourself.

First of all wikipedia is not a “neutral” not a “reliable” source of information eighter. Wikipedia is easily manipulated by some ideological groups diasporas and lobbies! And its easily seen particularly on articles. You accusing the Turkish people with being genocide executioners, pogrom makers antisemitists baby killers rapists and so and so in dozen of articles. So stop to claim you are so interested to provide knowledge about Turkey and Turkish peoole. No its not true! There is a huge disinformation and manipulation and discreditation about Turkey and Turkish nation. You should solve it and then you can talk about… Read more »

Sure. Reason with an autocrat. You know this article alone is a reason for Turkey to keep the truth out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide

I’m not surprised at all. A fanatic action from a fanatic country and state. I really wonder if I’d ever be able to see a time when Turks do something in favour of humanity and our world.

Wikipedia is my most valuable information resource of text and image on internet.

As someone who regularly edits the English Wikipedia, I fully support their statement on this issue. I’ve already signed the page that James Heilman has linked to above, which is a statement written by Wikimedians, not the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sorry. I support the decision of the Republic of Turkey. The historians who had opened the Turkish State Archives within the scope of the so-called Armenian Genocide were invited. The Armenian state did not obey it. The added images show the so-called Armenian bones. The document proving this is not the issue. To support terror in secret propaganda. Fair and impartial information does not support sharing. The necessity of urgent fulfillment of the requests of the Government of Turkey is obvious. I fully support this obstacle. Subled broadcasting can not be reconciled with freedom of information. ÜzgĂŒnĂŒm. TĂŒrkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti’nin… Read more »

It’s upsetting to see Turkey being dragged into Islamofascist dictatorship.

Wikipedia is OPEN for ABUSE of INFORMATION. Even more, black propaganda is considered as information after it is rooted in wikipedia. Wikipedia is vulnerable for “Organized black propaganda”. Terror organisations are determined and capable of creating fake sources and spreading fake fact(!) regarding these fake sources.
If WIKIPEDIA ADDS a “RELIABILITY INDEX” for Wikipedia topics, and creates a sustainable way to provide reliable data, then it might be considered as encyclopedia.

First of all, if we were to create some sort of reliability index for each and every article or source we have, we would be spending all of our time doing that manually because judging reliability based on English Wikipedia’s rules and standards simply can’t be done using a bot. Second, it’s highly unlikely that a terror organization (or any organization, for that matter) would be able to create an organization that is reliable by English Wikipedia’s standards. It would be pretty obvious from the start that they would not qualify as a reliable source about that organization. See English… Read more »

If you were really against the ban, you would lift the manipulated content where you say Turkey is terrorist. I think you want the ban to stay.

Can you provide the article and exact text on Wikipedia that says “Turkey is terrorist”? When I search for that I find nothing on EN WP. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%22Turkey+is+terrorist%22&title=Special:Search&go=Go&searchToken=4r12c6rbzhtsa92kc4ur77lf4

They voted that guy, again and AGAIN. Why now complaining about getting the consequences? Turkey has already seen many censorship acts way, way, way more relevant than “Wikipedia”. Thousands (thousands!) of people (including journalists, professors…) have been arrested in last months and it’s clear that soon Turkey will turn in a full dictatorship by all standards. That’s the path if it’s not already there! Who the hell cares about Wikipedia in a situation like this? And where exactly was this great organization who cares so deeply about freedom and sharing knowledge while all that was happening? Seriously, how many people… Read more »

I tried to comment and don’t see my comment. And then you complain about Turkey. That’s just great.

The thing you do is not ‘unbiased’ .

How am I supposed to do my homeworks without wikipedia 😛 Now we are using VPN’s to connect but this is not a permanent solution 😀

Wikipedia is has 100% biased community. I have analyzed those pages. The sources are utter gibberish claims. I can find 10s of more such claims against USA that proves USA has founded and funded ISIS
However would any of them be accepted? Of course not
I don’t think so Turkey will remove your ban until you get your editorial double faced policy right

And please enough that media freedom lies. Everybody in Turkey is no more restricted than other country, I see lots of country who secretly spies their people is known as free countries. I live in Turkey and I know it is all black propaganda. Lots of time I warn people in talk pages that they can trust Turkish media resources, no one listened me. I say content is biased and now Turkish authorities restricted access. Writers who did that deserve restriction, but Turkish people punished because your acts.

Reis diyenler, kapatılmasına destek verenler var ya hala ƟaĆŸÄ±rıyorum. arkadaƟ bakın bunun vatanperverlikle bir alakası yok ve vikipedi maddeleri kendisi yazmıyor. sitenin sloganına bakın yeter. ayrıca siz gözĂŒnĂŒzĂŒ kapattığınızda gĂŒneƟ yok olmuyor sadece sizin kĂŒĂ§ĂŒk dĂŒnyanız kararıyor biraz farkına varın artık.

Hey WORLD. Please save this country, I want to be free. Please help me

As long as it is not encouraging criminal activity and/or discriminating against an individual or a group of individuals, every opinion should be open to public access. I find it extremely disturbing when my country stop me from reading an article about human right ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights ) because of its political reasons. I suggest my country think that it can think for me. Well it cannot. I think for myself. People can decide for themselves. All a country supposed to do is to give people opportunity to chose. IF YOU DON’T LIKE WIKIPEDIA (which I know you do), THEN GO… Read more »

Dear Wikimedia, Although I do not support a ban on wikipedia, the Turkish government has a point here. Many times I have experienced myself that whenever I wanted to correct an article by providing proofs on the matter, my corrections were not taken into consideration, and the ideologically loaded article was continued to be served as if it is correct and unbiased information. If this is not the result of your company’s policy, then, you must be aware that some of your editors are biased, prejudiced, or worse, they may be acting on a political agenda. It is shameful for… Read more »

Read more »

As being one of the turkish civilians , i have to tell you that wikipedia is a great way to find information about everythink but somehow , Wikipedia writers have started to write wrong thinks and informations . The turkish gonveriement banned wiki for this . i think it is bad because the turkish gonveriement havent show any warnings . Ä°f wiki wants to be opened then wiki shall to remowe the wrong informations

TĂŒrk hĂŒkĂŒmetinden eriƟimi açmayı talep etmeden önce yasalara uygun davranın tĂŒrkiyede ofis açın vergi verin eskiden istediğiniz gibi at oynattğınız zamanlar geride kaldı

I am not happy with that ban of your website. Greetings from Turkey.

Sadece kendilerinin gerçeği savunduğunu iddia edenler ,gerçekleri aramaktan korkanlardır;karĆŸÄ± görĂŒĆŸlere mĂŒsamaha göstermezler.YanlÄ±ĆŸÄ± bilmeyen doğruyu da bilemez.Bu yĂŒzden hemen her konuda bilgiye ulaƟmamızı kolaylaƟtıran WÄ°KÄ°PEDÄ°A’nın açılmasını istiyoruz.
