On July 12th, 2024, the WikiForHumanRights (W4HR) in Nigeria 2024 Campaign hosted its third online training session. The session was facilitated by Rhoda James and moderated by Ramatu A Haliru, the local coordinator for W4HR 2024 in the Kaduna community, along with Kemi Makinde, one of the National Coordinators for W4HR in Nigeria 2024. The event was supported by the working team and local coordinators, focusing on helping 53 participants learn how to contribute to the campaign’s theme using Wikidata.
The session titled “Contributing to Wikidata,”provided participants from across the seven existing W4HR in Nigeria 2024 communities—WUGN Anambra Network, Igala Community, WUGN Osun, Port Harcourt Wikimedia Nigeria Hub, WUGN Kaduna Network, WUGN Imo Network and WUGN Gombe Network—with the skills needed to contribute to the campaign focus areas which included sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, clean water, and waste management.
The session continued with Rhoda James, the content designer for the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group, leading a 2-hour Wikidata training. Rhoda provided an in-depth exploration of the basics, principles, and common misconceptions about Wikidata. She also covered how to join Wikidata, create an account, set up editing tools, and perform both minor and major edits.
Key Highlights
Rhoda began the session by introducing Wikidata, covering its fundamentals, principles, and key facts. She explained how participants can customize their editing preferences and effectively structure Wikidata items.
The training moved on to a practical guide on creating a Wiki-user account and setting up a user profile, including configuring the editing interface. Rhoda delved deeper into the structure of Wikidata, demonstrating features like the query service, QuickStatements, gadgets, and beta tools. She also guided participants on setting preferences and enabling gadgets to enhance their editing experience. This was followed by a demonstration on performing edits, such as adding statements, values, references, images, and updating existing Wikidata items with new values.
Conclusion
The session concluded with a brief review of the progress made by the editors and a reminder about the score guide and the campaign’s key guidelines to ensure participants’ contributions are accurately counted and rewarded. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and clarify any uncertainties about the campaign. They were also encouraged to reach out to their community coordinators and trainers for one-on-one support.
For those who missed the session, the access link is available on the community training schedule. We also encourage everyone to register with any of the seven organizing communities to join our upcoming training sessions and receive timely email notifications an hour before each session begins. Together, let’s create knowledge for a sustainable future and close the information gap on sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, clean water, and waste management.
A heartfelt thank you to the Wikimedia Foundation, Coordinators, Working Team, Partners, and Participants!
