On the 27th of July 2024, the WikiForHumanRights (W4HR) in Nigeria 2024 Campaign hosted its sixth (6th) online training session. The session was facilitated by Iwuala Lucy and moderated by the working team and local coordinators to help participants learn how to contribute to the campaign’s theme on WikiCommons.
The session titled “Contributing to Wikicommons,”provided participants from across the seven existing W4HR in Nigeria 2024 communities—WUGN Anambra Network, Igala Community, WUGN Osun, Port Harcourt Wikimedia Nigeria Hub, WUGN Kaduna Network, WUGN Imo Network and WUGN Gombe Network—with the skills needed to contribute to the campaign focus areas which included sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, clean water, and waste management.
The session continued with Lucy Iwuala, a community lead from the Igbo Wikimedians User Group, leading the Wikicommons training providing an in-depth explanation on the quick facts, policies and guidelines, and procedures for uploading as well as it acceptable formats, copyrights and licensing on Wikimedia Commons.
Key Highlights
Lucy Iwuala kicked off the session by introducing Wikimedia Commons, covering its essential principles, guidelines, and key facts. She explained how participants can customize their editing preferences and effectively navigate the upload interface on Commons.
The training then shifted to a hands-on guide on creating a Wikimedia Commons account and setting up a user profile. Lucy delved into the details of the upload process, including acceptable file formats and copyright and licensing considerations. She demonstrated how to activate and use the necessary tools for uploading media, and other relevant gadgets.
Participants learned about Wikimedia Commons’ scope and policies, including the importance of adhering to copyright rules and licensing requirements. Lucy also provided a step-by-step demonstration on uploading new files and improving existing ones, offering practical tips on how to enhance their contributions.
Conclusion
The session concluded with a brief review of participants’ progress and a reminder about the campaign’s guidelines to ensure contributions are correctly counted and rewarded. Participants had the chance to ask questions and clarify any uncertainties about the uploading process. They were encouraged to reach out to their community coordinators and trainers for personalized support.
For those who missed the session, the access link is available on the community training schedule. We also encourage everyone to register with any of the seven organizing communities to join our upcoming training sessions and receive timely email notifications an hour before each session begins. Together, let’s create knowledge for a sustainable future and close the information gap on sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, clean water, and waste management.
A heartfelt thank you to the Wikimedia Foundation, Coordinators, Working Team, Partners, and Participants!
