At Wikimedia Spain, we promote cooperation and mutual support with other Wikimedia communities both locally and globally, forming a collaborative network that not only strengthens our mission of promoting free access to knowledge, but also facilitates an enriching cultural exchange. It also contributes to the creation of an extensive national and international support network.
Promoting global knowledge
Wikimedia Spain works vigorously to establish and strengthen relationships with other Wikimedia groups and chapters around the world. These collaborations are essential to:
- Exchange of ideas and experiences: Learning from the best practices and strategies of other groups and chapters helps to improve local activities and projects. An example of this was our participation as hosts together with Wikimedia Germany at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2022. We had the opportunity to highlight our local culture and heritage on a global stage.
- Joint national and international projects: Participating in global events such as International Day in 2022 together with Amical Wikimedia, Euskal Wikilarien Kultura Elkartea, Wikimedia Portugal, Galician Wikipedia y Asturian Wikipedia; as well as, the Spanish Wikipedia 20th Anniversary Celebration and ¡Alto! Mujeres trabajando with Spanish-speaking chapters and groups; or in countless local projects together with Amical Wikimedia, such as the Corpus Christi Festival in Valencia. This experience has allowed us to contribute significantly to the diversity and improvement of content in different languages and cultural contexts.
- Innovation and creativity: Initiatives such as our participation in the 20th Triennial ICOM-CC Conference in Valencia 2023, together with the Wikimedia Foundation, chapters from Italy, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland and Amical Wikimedia, have allowed us to connect with the GLAM world, give visibility to our work on Wikimedia projects, and discover new opportunities for collaboration.
Likewise, at the Porto Meeting in 2023, with the Italian and Portuguese chapters, aimed at promoting linguistic diversity in Wikimedia projects, we were able to reflect and analyse together the difficulties and opportunities, and open the debate to researchers, academics and other interested parties.
- Training and skills development: Through our participation in different international conferences, workshops and seminars, our community acquires new skills and knowledge that enrich the work at Wikimedia Spain. We have continuously participated in Wikimania, sharing with free knowledge leaders from around the world, building collaborative networks, and debating projects and approaches.
We also participated in the GLAM Wiki Conference in Uruguay 2023, sharing experience with cultural and heritage professionals in the Wikimedia community.
Positive impact and future collaborations
The impact of these local and international relationships is reflected in the growth and diversification of Wikimedia Spain’s content and community. By working with alliances around the world, Wikimedia Spain achieves the following:
- Increase diversity of content: Ensure that Wikipedia and other projects contain accurate and diverse information, representing multiple cultural perspectives.
- Promote inclusion and equity: Collaborate on projects that promote the inclusion of historically underrepresented voices in the digital sphere.
- Expand the volunteer network: Motivate new volunteers to join in promoting free knowledge, inspired by the global impact of their contributions.
- Strengthening the community: mainly with our Wikimedia communities around the world.
Wikimedia Spain invites all people interested in free knowledge to participate. In this way, we can continue to build a world where everyone has access to the sum of all human knowledge.
