As part of the implementation of the second phase of movement strategy in Africa Great Lakes region, supported by Wikimedia DRC, Wikimedia Rwanda and Wikimedia Burundi, Wikimedia DRC organized an advanced training workshop and an edit-a-thon on Wikidata and SPARQL. The event took place from 29 to 30 November at Go Innovation in Goma.
During the workshop, more than 17 participants were introduced to the fundamentals of databases, the hashtag#RDF triplet of the semantic web, open data (hashtag#opensource) and the query language.
They were then trained in Wikidata as an open knowledge base, learning to understand its structure (label-property-value), while creating new DRC-related elements and improving existing ones.
To conclude the workshop, participants were introduced to hashtag#SPARQL, the query language used by Wikidata. This enabled them to create their first queries to interrogate and display the data stored on the platform.
This workshop was a significant step in strengthening the skills of the participants, providing them with essential tools to contribute to the enrichment of knowledge about the Great Lakes region on the one hand, and on the other, a way for us to align our activities with the 6ᵉ recommendation of the Wikimedia Movement 2030 strategy. #Invest in skills and leadership development.
Thank you to all the participants, facilitators and partners 🎉
