In 2019, a humble idea took root—a campaign named Wiki Loves Love. The goal was simple yet profound: to showcase testimonials of love in different cultures, weaving a narrative that united hearts across the globe. But as with all great stories, evolution was inevitable. By 2020, this spark of love transformed into something larger—Wiki Loves Folklore. With this, the campaign opened its arms to embrace the diversity of cultures, inviting everyone to share the beauty of their local traditions and heritage.
Fast forward to today, February 1, 2025, and we find ourselves standing at the threshold of the campaign’s 7th consecutive year. What began as a project of passion has become a global celebration of culture, creativity, and community. For me, this milestone also marks my fourth year as the Lead Coordinator, a role I’ve embraced with pride and gratitude.
The journey, however, has been anything but linear. Along the way, we’ve faced the challenges of a global pandemic, the turmoil of wars and conflicts, and countless moments of uncertainty. Yet, these trials have only solidified our resolve. Wiki Loves Folklore became more than just a campaign; it became a testament to the resilience of human spirit and the unyielding power of collaboration.
At the heart of this success is a tapestry of dedication. From Psychoslave and Rupika Sharma, the visionary founders who ignited this flame of volunteership, to the Wikimedia Grants Committee, the tireless Social media team, Central notice Administrators, WLF Core team together with Joy, Stella, Joris, Hrithik, our regional and language Ambassador and the over 300 organizers and 3,000+ volunteers who join hands each year—each thread in this tapestry tells a story of commitment and love for culture.
Today, Wiki Loves Folklore is a cornerstone of Wikimedia campaigns, ranking among the most celebrated photography and writing competitions in the movement. It’s a stage where culture is honoured, voices are amplified, and stories find their place in the world’s largest free knowledge repository.
A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.
— Mahatma Gandhi
This year, under the theme #WeTogether, we invite you to be part of this celebration. Share the folklore that defines your community—whether it’s through a photograph, a video, an audio, or an article. Let the world glimpse the beauty of your heritage. Your contributions don’t just enrich Wikipedia; they preserve culture for generations to come.
Every entry is more than just a submission—it’s a connection, a celebration, and a step toward a more inclusive world. And yes, let’s not forget the thrill of participating in a global festival where exciting prizes await!
But beyond the accolades and milestones, the spirit of Wiki Loves Folklore lies in its unity. This is a campaign powered by people—a collective heartbeat of individuals coming together for a cause greater than themselves. And this, I believe, is just the beginning. The horizon is vast, the journey is long, and the possibilities are endless.
So let’s continue this incredible journey together. Let’s celebrate the stories that make us unique and the shared humanity that brings us closer. This is Wiki Loves Folklore, and this is our story.
The contest is open for participation annually, running from February 1st to March 31st on Wikimedia Commons.
