Language is at the heart of cultural identity, shaping the way we connect with our history, traditions, and communities. However, many languages remain underrepresented online, limiting access to knowledge in native tongues. This is why Wikitongues is launching the second edition of the Wiki Loves Mother Tongue Campaign, an initiative to promote linguistic diversity on Wikimedia platforms.
What is the Wiki Loves Mother Tongue Campaign?
From February 21 to March 21, 2025, Wikitongues will host a month-long campaign dedicated to expanding content about languages, language activists, etc., on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikiquote. This includes:
- creating and improving Wikipedia articles about languages, dialects, activists, and linguistic heritage.
- Adding structured data about languages on Wikidata.
- Uploading media files (photos, audio, and videos) related to languages on Wikimedia Commons.
- Contributing language-related quotes to Wikiquote.
This campaign is open to everyone, and participants can contribute in any language they choose. Whether you’re a native speaker, a language enthusiast, or a researcher, your contributions will help make knowledge more accessible in diverse languages.
Why Participate?
🌍 Promote language preservation – Many languages are at risk of disappearing and increasing their online presence helps keep them alive.
📖 Make knowledge more inclusive –By contributing in different languages, you ensure more people can access information in their mother tongue.
🏆 Win exciting prizes! – The top three contributors will be recognized and rewarded for their efforts.
