On a memorable Friday, the Hebrew Wikipedia community came together at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot to celebrate Wikipedia’s 24th anniversary with a special winter gathering. The event welcomed about 90 participants, ranging from experienced editors to new contributors, along with staff and volunteers from Wikimedia Israel. This gathering not only served as a celebration of this significant milestone but also provided a valuable opportunity for editors to meet face-to-face, connect beyond usernames, and deepen their relationships with one another and with the movement for free knowledge.
Insights from Research on the Community

To kick off the event, Wikimedia Israel’s Executive Director, Michal Wander Schwartz, and Chairman, Itzik Edri, presented key findings from the recent survey conducted among the Hebrew Wikipedia community in the second half of 2024. The discussion focused on strengthening community ties, improving communication among editors, and fostering a welcoming environment for new contributors—elements crucial for expanding and diversifying content on Hebrew Wikipedia.
A Conversation with a Nobel Laureate

One of the most anticipated moments of the event was the guest lecture by Professor Ada Yonath, winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She captivated the audience by sharing her groundbreaking scientific discoveries and her journey—from a young girl fascinated by science to becoming one of the world’s most renowned researchers. Her talk underscored the importance of curiosity, perseverance, and the pursuit of knowledge—values that resonate deeply with the Wikipedia community.
Fun and Rituals

Beyond the intellectual discussions, the event featured engaging social activities aimed at fostering a sense of belonging among community members. As always, the highlight was the traditional Wikipedia birthday cake-cutting ceremony. This year, the honor was given to Jonathan Berkheim, an active editor and dedicated Wikimedia Israel volunteer. Jonathan played a key role in organizing the past two winter meetings at the Weizmann Institute, making him a fitting choice for this symbolic moment.
Looking Forward

The event concluded with a renewed sense of commitment to Wikipedia’s mission of free knowledge. With nearly 90 attendees, the meeting was a testament to the enduring strength of the Hebrew Wikipedia community. We look forward to many more opportunities to come together, share knowledge, and continue building the largest repository of free knowledge in Hebrew.
