Following the Africa Wiki Women Skill Up Workshop Wikipedia 101 training, comes the birth of Wikipedia 102, an advanced session aimed at teaching, informing, and empowering Wikimedians—especially African women—with the skills required to contribute effectively to the world’s largest encyclopedia, Wikipedia.
The Wikipedia 101 session provided a foundational understanding of Wikipedia, covering the basics of editing and navigation. Wikipedia 102 training, however, offered a more in-depth, hands-on experience, diving deeper into advanced editing techniques.
The session was led by Muib Shefiu, a skilled editor and the current New Page Reviewer and Auto-patroller on the English Wikipedia. He structured the session into two key segments: the theoretical and practical segments. During the theoretical segment, Shefiu provided a comprehensive breakdown of advanced Wikipedia editing techniques. He explained how to use advanced formatting tools like infoboxes and tables to present complex data clearly and improve article structure.
We also explored tools like HotCat, Twinkle, and Rater—which simplify and speed up the editing process. A critical focus was placed on research and source evaluation, emphasizing the importance of using reliable and verifiable references when contributing to Wikipedia.
The distinction between primary, secondary, and independent sources was highlighted while reinforcing the need to maintain Wikipedia’s integrity and uphold its core principles of neutrality and accuracy.
The practical segment brought the theoretical aspect to life as the hands-on experience demonstrated how these tools significantly improve article clarity and structure. This real-time practice reinforced the importance of proper citation and the need to maintain Wikipedia’s standards of accuracy and neutrality.
