There are many ways you can contribute to Wikimedia projects. Some write articles, some protect pages from vandalism, and some others write code for MediaWiki. But did you know that you can also help design user experience for Wikimedia projects?

To promote this idea, an initiative was taken by the design team of Wikimedia Foundation where a design system team member presented the principles and guidelines of Wikimedia’s Codex design system and how to use it while designing for Wikimedia projects. In the spirit of open collaboration, all the sessions were recorded and slides are available to anybody interested in using our design system.

Organized by the design team of Wikimedia Foundation in collaboration with Africa Wikimedia Technical Community (AWTC) and UI/UX Africa, this online event opened up an opportunity to interested volunteer designers from the AWTC for a two-day design jam.

Over two days from 12-13 December 2024, designers engaged in learning more on the benefits of using a design system, Codex design principles and style guide, and how to use the Codex Figma library that provides the most up-to-date design resources.

The Wikimedia Africa Design Jam was a step towards empowering the AWTC with the knowledge and tools to enrich the Wikimedia Codex Design System and, by extension, the user experience of Wikimedia projects. We hope that this event will inspire other communities to conduct their own design jam in the future. All this will empower them to make sharing of all human knowledge easy and joyful, for everyone.

We would like to thank the Design Systems Team and Joris Quarshie (Community Lead, AWTC) for their support of the Wikimedia Design Jam.
