We are happy to announce that the Capacity Exchange tool has a fresh new version! And it is waiting for you to check it out.
Take a look at the video we created to celebrate this special moment.
New look of the tool
In this version, we attempted to incorporate all the community feedback received in the last months since last launch, at Wikimania 2024. The new version offers a unique look and feel and one of the main innovations is the Organization Profile. The development team worked very hard to release this version for the Wikimedia community, and we hope you enjoy it.
Following the principles of UX/UI Design, the development team created a mobile-first tool, which is accessible to all groups and is lightweight. The platform is multilanguage, by being integrated to TranslateWiki, and complies with the privacy and security settings of Wikimedia projects.
In accordance with our Technical plan, this version includes an improved user profile, an enhanced Capacity Directory, an exploration feed where you can find people and initiatives of interest searching by capacity, and a completely new organization profile.
Now, every initiative, affiliate, or independent group can have their own CapX profile. To create it, organizations representatives must contact anyone of the team and tell us the username of whom you want to administrate your profile. It is worth mentioning that it must be someone who has already created its own CapX user profile.
We invite you all to create (or update) your Capacity Exchange profile, and start sharing at capx.toolforge.org.
How can I engage with Capacity Exchange?
The first way of engaging with the platform is to use it. For the tool to achieve its goal and be a central place for people, affiliates, and communities to find and connect with each other, we need Wikimedians to use it. So, we invite you to access capx.toolforge.org and create (or update) your user profile with just a few clicks. Those who want to administrate their group or chapter’s profile, please reach out to us so we can give you admin access.
You can also promote it within your own community. There are six Community Outreach Facilitators in CapX’s team who can help you organize workshops and sessions to present the tool. Either Benny Lin (Indonesia), Joris Quarshie (Ghana), Nivas Ramisetty (India), Rita Maliqi (Kosovo), Tochi Precious (Nigeria/Finland), Vic Sfriso (Argentina), or CapX’s project manager, Amanda Jurno, will be happy to assist you with your needs. Please write to capx@wmnobrasil.org and request CapX’s Outreach Facilitators support.
Finally, you are welcome to translate it. Being integrated to TranslateWiki, the tool can be easily put into your own language. The translations take a few days to be available in the tool, so take that into consideration if you’re planning a community event, for example.
We also have an international Advisory Committee to advise the team on project development. If your community wants to contribute to the development phase, please reach out and we can discuss your participation.
What’s next?
This is a work in progress, so we’ve barely finished releasing this version and have already started working on the new features to come. We are planning to deliver soon an entirely new Events page, the possibility to directly message the user you want to connect with, and some improvements in the other pages. You can take a look at our Technical Plan to see what has been planned so far, and follow the news through our Activities page on meta.
We are also committed to increasingly adapting the tool to the Movement’s most diverse needs. Therefore, we are open to discussing possible changes and improvements to meet the demands of your community. You can leave your comments on the Bug Report tool, or be bold and reach out to us with your ideas!
More info about the Project
The Capacity Exchange (CapX) is a platform designed by and for the Wikimedia Movement.
It is a centrally-designed tool that allows for decentralized capacity building, from the recognition that the knowledge and skills needed for community capacity building are already within our reach, among us. The project directly responds to Recommendation 6 of the Movement Strategy 2030 by providing a service to facilitate matching/connecting people across the Movement for teaching and learning skills, addressing the largest missing item in the movement’s toolbox: peer support.
This second iteration of Capacity Exchange is coordinated and administered by Wiki Movimento Brasil, with the guidance of an international Advisory Committee, and is planned to last until June 2025.
You can get more information about CapX’s team and project at our meta page, or by emailing us at capx@wmnobrasil.org.
