In the world of the open Wikimedia movement, we often find ourselves trapped in metrics: how many thousands of new articles were created this week? But what is the value of thousands of articles if they end up as a “fleeting glimpse of shallow information”—consisting of merely two stub paragraphs with minimal citations?

In this project (batu basurek is the Minangkabau term for ancient inscriptions), we chose a more challenging path: focusing on quality. We completed and enriched stub articles about 13th and 14th-century inscriptions in West Sumatra province, Indonesia, transforming them from basic two-paragraph stubs into comprehensive documentation—complete with transliteration, historical analysis, verified academic references, and updated photography.
When Wikipedia Becomes the Last Line of Defense
Why is documenting these inscriptions so crucial? The answer lies in the field.
While conducting field surveys in preparation for our projects, we encountered a stark contrast. On one hand, some cultural heritage sites are neatly maintained and well-managed. On the other hand, there are historical sites standing isolated in the middle of rice paddies, weathering away with neglected information boards, and vulnerable to the erosion of time.
When public attention and physical heritage face the threat of fading due to neglect, accurate digital documentation on Wikipedia becomes the last line of defense. If we do not document and verify them today, these traces of civilization could vanish forever or slip into prolonged obscurity. It would be a profound loss if such valuable knowledge remained restricted only to specialists.
The Peer-Mentorship Model: The Secret Recipe of Our Collaboration
Transforming a stub article into a high-standard reference piece is no easy task for new editors. The key to the success of Wiki Batu Basurek lies in the role of the core organizers acting as “chief editors,” alongside a peer-mentorship system that pairs newcomer volunteers with experienced editors across communities (Wikimedia Jakarta and Wikimedia Padang).
The core organizers did not simply invite volunteers to edit; they prepared a comprehensive “ammo kit” prior to the events:
- Partnership and Permitting: Establishing collaboration with a government agency for cultural heritage preservation (the West Sumatra Cultural Heritage Agency) that oversees the inscription sites (the Adityawarman Inscription Complex and the Ponggongan site) to secure access permits and documentation rights.
- Digitalization and Reference Curation: Aggregating hard-to-find references—such as epigraphy guidebooks and academic journals—into a shared repository.
- Structural Drafting Guides: Providing standardized editing templates covering discovery context, transliteration, translation, and reference lists.
- High-Quality Photo Repository: Uploading high-resolution, updated visual documentation from field visits directly to Wikimedia Commons.
Equipped with this kit, new editors no longer felt overwhelmed in front of a blank screen. They worked side-by-side in small groups to analyze references. The result? Article quality improved significantly, and community writing capacity grew rapidly.
Moving Forward: Wiki Prasasti
Currently, we are submitting the proposal for Wiki Prasasti (prasasti is the Indonesian term for ancient inscriptions) through the Wikimedia Foundation’s Rapid Fund. This follow-up project aims to expand our mission to the historical regions of Banten, Bogor, and Jakarta, on Java island.
We want to prove that article-writing projects do not always have to be content factories driven solely by quantity. Instead, they can serve as “guardians of civilization’s collective memory” through high-quality, comprehensive articles that inform the wider public. We hope this initiative inspires Wikimedia communities in Indonesia and around the world to continuously emphasize quality and depth of coverage in their future writing projects.
