Twenty-five years of Wikipedia is not just a milestone for the global Wikimedia movement; it is a celebration of every language community that keeps free knowledge alive. In Odisha, India, the Odia Wikimedians User Group marked this silver jubilee through a dynamic series of activities blending public festivals, institutional partnerships, community gatherings, and digital contributions.
From lively cultural gatherings to lecture halls and community studios, here is the story of how we celebrated Wikipedia 25–along with what worked, what we learned, and where we are heading next.
Taking Wikipedia to the Public
One of our core goals was to make Wikipedia visible beyond typical digital spaces by taking it directly to people in their everyday community settings.
- Public Festivals & Low-Barrier Engagement: We brought Wikipedia awareness to the Pritipranati Annual Celebration in Bhubaneswar and set up an eight-day public Wikipedia 25 Selfie Point & Quiz at the Bhadrak Mahotsav in January 2026. These light-hearted, interactive setups proved to be fantastic conversation starters–drawing festival-goers, engaging curious school children, and even welcoming the District Collector of Bhadrak, who joined in the celebrations for a ceremonial cake cutting.
- Campus Outreach at Gangadhar Mohapatra Law College, Puri: In March, we hosted an educational workshop with over 40 students and faculty members. The enthusiasm was remarkable: it sparked vibrant discussions on open knowledge and law, culminating in extensive regional media coverage across ten major print and digital publications, including historic dailies like Sambad and Prameya.
- Podcasts and Cultural Conversations: Between April and June, we experimented with audio storytelling and podcasts in Bhubaneswar to foster dialogue on language preservation and digital archiving.
- Birthday Meetup: In July, volunteers, writers, and cultural partners gathered at Studio NR in Bhubaneswar for our formal Wikipedia 25 celebration, honoring the contributors and allies who champion the Odia language online. We also paused to pay tribute to the memory and legacy of Dr. Subas Chandra Rout.
Impact by the Numbers
While outreach was about building connections and awareness, our online efforts focused on expanding quality Odia-language knowledge across Wikimedia projects:
- 81 New Articles created on Odia Wikipedia via our Wiki25 Edit-a-thon.
- 921 Odia Pronunciations & Words recorded on Wikimedia Commons via Lingua Libre, significantly enriching open audio archives for the language.
- 916 Wikidata Items created or improved to strengthen Odia representation in structured data.
- 55+ Direct In-Person Participants engaged across physical workshops and institutional events.
What Worked Best
Reflecting on the campaign, several key strategies stood out:
- Leveraging Existing Gatherings: Rather than relying solely on stand-alone Wikimedia events, meeting people at established cultural festivals exposed open knowledge to audiences who might never have sought out a Wikipedia meetup.
- Institutional Collaboration: Partnering with educational institutions like Gangadhar Mohapatra Law College provided credible, high-impact platforms that attracted strong media interest and engaged faculty and students alike.
- Simple, Interactive Formats: Quizzes and photo points lowered the threshold for engagement, turning passive spectators into active participants.
Honest Learnings for Future Campaigns
Milestone celebrations offer a valuable space for honest evaluation. Our experience highlighted a key distinction: celebrations and awareness drives are exceptional for visibility and goodwill, but they require a different approach to convert people into long-term editors.
Looking Forward
The silver jubilee was a reminder that open knowledge in regional languages thrives on both small, consistent efforts and strong local partnerships. We are deeply grateful to every editor, partner institution, student, and community members along with the support staff from the WFM who took part in these celebrations.
