From the Spirit of Gotong-Royong to Digital Knowledge

Malaysia Day is more than just a date commemorating the formation of the country. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the diverse histories, cultures, languages and communities that make up Malaysia. For Wikimedia Malaysia, this spirit is expressed through WikiGotong-Royong Malaysia Day 2026, a digital editing campaign (edit-a-thon) that brings together volunteers to enrich and document knowledge about Malaysian history, heritage, culture, local languages, and figures involved in the formation of Malaysia focused on Wikipedia Project.

The concept of gotong-royong, which is deeply rooted in Malaysian society, is brought into the digital space. While traditional gotong-royong involves communities coming together and working collectively, WikiGotong-Royong invites contributors to share their time, knowledge and skills to build free knowledge resources. Each edit may seem small, but when carried out collectively, these contributions can create something much greater for the benefit of the public.

Diverse Communities, One Collective Effort

WikiGotong-Royong Malaysia Day 2026 was open to anyone who wished to contribute voluntarily. The campaign also highlighted the participation of Wikimedians from various language and cultural communities in Malaysia, including Kadazandusun, Kimaragang, Iban, Kelate, Bajau and Malay.

A total of 13 editors from six communities took part in the campaign. They were Blusjai, Jjurieee, Lynumiss, Sipatung, SNN95, 23jvvn, Danggoo, PeaceSeekers, Qhairy, Rruunnaa, Song GK, Ellieziera J and Rombituon. Project that included are: dtp.wikipedia.org, incubator.wikimedia.org, ms.wikipedia.org, dtp.wikipedia.org, iba.wikipedia.org, bdr.wikipedia.org.

The diversity of participants conveys an important message: knowledge about Malaysia does not come from a single voice or a single community. Every community has its own history, experiences, languages and heritage to share. When knowledge from different communities is brought together through Wikimedia projects, it not only enriches digital content but also creates opportunities for a wider audience to discover and appreciate Malaysia’s diversity.

26 New Articles, 52 Articles Improved

As a result of this collective effort, 26 new articles were created, while 52 existing articles were edited and improved in just one day, on 16th September 2026.

Check out our outreach dashboard on this link!

Behind these numbers are the efforts of individual editors who took the time to find information, add content, improve articles and ensure that the knowledge shared could benefit others. The results may appear to be mere statistics, but each article represents another piece of knowledge that is now available in the digital space and can continue to be developed by the community in the future. More importantly, content produced through campaigns such as this has the potential to serve as free reference resources and reading materials for the public.

Hopes for the Future

WikiGotong-Royong Malaysia Day 2026 also serves as a reminder that contributions to free knowledge do not necessarily have to begin with something big.

Sometimes, they begin with a single edit.

A single word, sentence, reference, or article may seem small. However, when more people choose to spend a little of their time and contribute consistently, these small contributions can grow into a much larger body of knowledge.

We hope that more volunteers will make time and create opportunities to contribute to Wikimedia projects. With greater participation from diverse communities, more local knowledge can be documented, shared and passed on in forms that are accessible to everyone.

Ultimately, WikiGotong-Royong Malaysia Day 2026 is more than just an editing campaign. It is a small effort to build free reference resources for public use, while ensuring that Malaysia’s stories, languages, cultures and histories continue to have a place in the digital world, enriched by multilingual contributions from local communities.

Malaysia Day reminds us of the diversity that shapes this country. Through WikiGotong-Royong, that diversity is not only celebrated, but also documented and shared as collective knowledge.

A single edit may be small. But when we work together, small contributions can become a heritage for everyone.
