Celebrating Wikipedia’s 25th Anniversary Through Local Community Engagement in Tabora, Tanzania

On 15 January 2026, Wikipedia celebrated its 25th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the Wikimedians of Tabora community hosted a local celebration that brought together volunteers who participated both in person and virtually to learn, share experiences, and contribute to Wikipedia. Beyond marking the anniversary, the event also aimed to bridge content gaps on the Swahili Wikipedia and welcome new editors into the Wikimedia movement. For many attendees, this was their first time participating in an in-person Wikipedia event. Others were experienced Wikimedians who had been contributing for years, but everyone shared the excitement of celebrating 25 years of free knowledge. Throughout the day, participants connected with one another, exchanged experiences, and so much more.

The celebration began with participant registration and a welcoming session, followed by introductions that allowed everyone to get to know one another. Attendees then took part in a presentation about the history of Wikipedia, its global impact over the past 25 years, and the role that volunteers continue to play in making knowledge freely accessible. The session also highlighted the growth of Wikimedia communities in Tanzania and the importance of contributing to Swahili Wikipedia. Special thanks to Mohamed Lupinga (User:Muddyb), the Bureaucrat of Swahili Wikipedia, for presenting the history and overview of Swahili Wikipedia.

Most of the participants were completely new to Wikipedia editing. During the introductions, one newcomer remarked, “I knew Wikipedia existed, but I never realized that anyone could edit it in Swahili.” Similar reflections were shared by several participants, many of whom were eager to make their very first edits.

Furthermore, we held practical editing sessions and an edit-a-thon focused on improving Swahili Wikipedia articles. Experienced volunteers provided one-on-one guidance, helping newcomers create accounts, understand Wikipedia’s editing policies, add reliable references, and improve articles. The collaborative atmosphere allowed participants to learn by doing while receiving immediate support whenever they encountered challenges.

The impact of the celebration extended well beyond the event itself. Contributions tracked through the Outreach Dashboard during the in-person event and the follow-up editing challenge resulted in over 250 created and improved articles, 65 references added, and nearly 85,000 bytes of content contributed across Wikimedia projects.

The celebration concluded with a group photo and the ceremonial cutting of a custom Wikipedia 25th anniversary cake. The occasion provided a memorable way to celebrate Wikipedia’s silver jubilee while recognizing the contributions of volunteers who continue to grow free knowledge in Tanzania.

Looking forward, bringing together experienced Wikimedians and newcomers to celebrate Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary was a meaningful success. The next step is to continue supporting these new contributors, build on the momentum generated by the event, and strengthen a sustainable Wikimedia community in Tabora.
