Bangla Wikipedia International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples Edit-a-thon 2025

Every year on 9 August, the world comes together to observe the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This day, first proclaimed by the United Nations in 1994, serves as a reminder to uphold the rights of Indigenous communities and to raise awareness about their rich cultures, struggles, and significant contributions. It is also a day to recognise their vital role in preserving languages, traditions, and the environment for future generations.

The theme for 2025 is “Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures.” This year’s theme highlights the opportunities and challenges that Artificial Intelligence brings for Indigenous communities. It calls attention to the need for protecting their rights, ensuring fair representation, and empowering them to shape technologies that impact their lands, resources, and livelihoods.

To mark this occasion, the Chattogram Wikimedia Community is organising a special online edit-a-thon. The focus will be on creating and improving articles about Indigenous peoples—their history, languages, traditions, and cultures—so that accurate and reliable information is available in Bangla. This effort aims to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous knowledge on Wikipedia and make free knowledge more inclusive.
