India is quite famous for its diverse cuisine which is reminiscent of unity in diversity. The food, culture and traditions of India has been nourished, nurtured and shaped by its long history, unique geography and greatly influenced by the reigns of different rulers, travellers and neighbours. It has numerous ingredients, deploys a wide range of food preparation styles, cooking techniques and culinary presentation. Indian cuisine is invariably complex because it varies from region to region, reflecting the people of the ethnically diverse subcontinent. There are different cultures following different style food habits.

Wiki Loves Food is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons. It aims at developing and improving the quality and quantity of pictures of various cuisines found from all over India and thus highlighting and celebrating the profusion, diversity and ethnicity of Indian cuisines. This will be oriented on different types of Indian Food and Beverages. This photo competition further aims at highlighting the traditional as well as the less renowned local food items.

In 2015, the Wikimedia India Chapter had taken the initiative to decrease the knowledge gap regarding this area. It became a landmark event causing huge sensation in the ways and means of the wikimovement. As a sequel to that event, this year the West Bengal Wikimedian user group has taken an initiative to conduct this event entitled Wiki Loves Food 2021 in India to be held from 15th March to 14th April 2021.

West Bengal Wikimedians is a Wikimedia user group (affiliate) from West Bengal, India, that aims to build a strong and diverse volunteer community base throughout and around the state. The user group conducts regular activities to improve freely-licensed high-quality content on Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, and other Wikimedia projects. The user group also has experience in successfully conducting national-level events such as Wiki Loves Monuments India (2020, 2019, 2018).
