Launch of the Wikimedia Research Fund

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Resources and Research teams are excited to announce the launch of the first dedicated Research Fund as part of the new Wikimedia Foundation Funds strategy

The Research Fund has two goals:

  • expand, strengthen, and diversify the network of Wikimedia researchers globally, and
  • fund research initiatives that support the Wikimedia Movement in deeper understanding of the projects, decision making, and building technologies for the Wikimedia projects.

Our aim is to encourage newcomers and established researchers in underrepresented communities to join the Wikimedia movement through the Research Fund. Between now and January 2022, we will reach out to established and emerging research communities to raise awareness about the fund as well as the existing research needs of the Wikimedia communities. We ask you to do the same: please share information about the fund with communities who may be interested in research on or about the Wikimedia projects. We will be hosting office hours in English and Spanish where prospective applicants can get feedback about their proposals and ideas.

To learn more about the Wikimedia Research Fund please visit our meta page or attend one of our upcoming sessions. If you have any questions, please reach out via the discussion page on meta or research_fund@wikimedia.org.
