On August 13, 2022, the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group hosted a satellite event for Wikimania 2022 in Tamale, Ghana. The event was an opportunity for participants to discuss issues, report on new projects and approaches, and exchange ideas.
Wikimania is the Wikimedia Movement’s annual conference that brings Wikimedian’s from around the world on a common platform, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation to celebrate the free knowledge made possible by volunteers.
In Ghana, the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group helped two other Wikimedia Communities get the most out of the conference by hosting satellite events before, during, and after Wikimania.
The Gurene Wikimedia Community’s Pre-Conference event
The Gurene Wikimedia Community had the support to organize a pre-conference event at the Ajumako campus of the University of Education, Winneba. The conference’s YouTube Channel also provided participants an alternative to following live and past sessions. Participants went home feeling inspired and ready to take part in the rest of the event.
The Dagbani Wikimedia community’s Conference event
The second event, hosted by members of the Dagbani Wikimedia community, brought participants together on day 2 of Wikimania. The executive director for the Dagbani Wikimedians user group, Sadik Shahadu, took participants through the Wikimania conference registration and helped them navigate through the online platform. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions during breakout sessions. The communications manager for the Dagbani Wikimedians user group, Alhassan Mohammed Awal, also shared daily updates on the sessions and highlights of the Wikimania conference and how to change time zones.
The Moore Wikimedia community’s Post-Wikimania event
The third event was support for the Moore Wikimedia community in organizing a post-Wikimania event at the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group’s office in Tamale. The event also brought together over 20 members of the Moore Wikimedia Community to discuss and share ideas on how to participate effectively in the Wikimedia Movement. That made the participation by our community members in this year’s Wikimania the best.
The three satellite events allowed community members to participate more effectively because the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group provided them with internet access. During break periods, participants had the chance to ask questions about the conference and the Wikimedia movement in general.
