African journalists can self nominate stories that help to expand knowledge about Africa from May 3 – June 30, 2023
The Wikimedia Foundation has today launched the Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards, to celebrate the contributions of journalists in Africa who prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion in their reporting.
The awards recognise the role journalists play in creating well-researched articles that volunteer editors can use as source materials to develop content on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Journalists can help increase equity on Wikipedia, and ensure that the world’s knowledge is not limited to the perspectives and experiences of a select few. Through Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards we want to celebrate these efforts, shining a light on reporting that helps to close knowledge gaps and uncovers more of Africa’s rich history and culture.
African journalists, living on the continent, who are writing stories that are helping to close knowledge gaps about Africa, are invited to self nominate their articles between May 3 – June 30, 2023 at wikimediafoundation.org/journalism-awards.
Submissions
The call for submissions is now open, and we are inviting you to help spread the word. The awards cover articles published between January 1, 2022 and June 23, 2023.
African members of the Wikimedia community who are also journalists and living in Africa, are able to nominate published articles to be considered for the awards.
The categories and wider award design have been shaped with the support of a working group composed of African Wikimedia community members and Foundation staff. The categories (below) have also been shared for feedback with affiliate leads across the region.
Submissions will close on June 30, 2023, 23:59 UTC
