Hi! This is Eugene Ormandy, a Japanese Wikimedian and Newcomer of the Year 2023. In this post, I introduce comments from Wikimedian of the Year 2023 awardees about Wikimania 2023.
Q1. How did you enjoy Wikimania 2023?
Taufik Rosman (Wikimedian of the Year) : I get to reconnect with other Wikimedians I met in the past. Get to have a large gathering with fellow Malaysian Wikimedians for the first time. Get to inspired many people with the achievement I received. Get to learn more about the Wikimedia movement.
Siobhan Leachman (Wikimedia Laureate) : It was amazing! To meet so many people, to understand more about the scope of all the work Wikimedians are doing around the world, I just loved Wikimania 2023!
Eugene Ormandy (Newcomer of the Year) : It was the first time for me to join Wikimania. I’m really happy to make many Wikimedia friends around the world. Wikimania 2023 is one of the best experiences in my life.
Pax Ahimsa Gethen (Media Contributor of the Year) : I attended remotely so didn’t get the full experience, but was glad to participate.
Zabe (Tech Contributor of the Year) : I really liked wikimania, the opportunity to share your experiences and ideas with others is really valuable.
Anton Protsiuk (Honorable Mention) : Wikimania 2023 was a great experience – a chance to reconnect with wikimedians from across the world in-person for the first time in four years, as well as an important opportunity to tell folks more about the work done in the Ukrainian community, such as decolonization of knowledge in and about Ukraine.
Q2. What will you want to do after Wikimania 2023?
Taufik Rosman (Wikimedian of the Year) : Do more events and activities for the Malaysian community. Give talks on my achievement. Try to collaborate with more Wikimedia communities around the world.
Siobhan Leachman (Wikimedia Laureate) : As well as continuing to contribute to several existing projects I have attended meetings with the Aotearoa New Zealand Wiki group and the Wellington Wiki group reporting back on my experiences at Wikimania 2023. I have had a meeting with Auckland Museum staff updating them on some of what I experienced at Wikimania 2023 and also what I’m working on and how Auckland Museum can benefit or reuse the information or workflows I’ve discovered or am reusing. I’ve also started contributing to a new project I’m collaborating on, the Wikidata WikiProject Research Expeditions.
Eugene Ormandy (Newcomer of the Year) : I think it is important to keep in touch with friends I met in Wikimania 2023. So I launched two projects with my friends after the event; Wikimedia Japan-Malaysia Friendship with Taufiik and Wikimedia Japan-Türkiye Friendship with Caner. I hope that our international collaborations will improve Wikimedia and make this world better.
Pax Ahimsa Gethen (Media Contributor of the Year) : Continue to work on improving representation of marginalized people by creating and editing biographies and photos.
Zabe (Tech Contributor of the Year) : I will go back to my real life, in which I now perceive the wikimedia projects as a hobby from a different point of view and I hope that the experience will help my contributions in a positive way.
Anton Protsiuk (Honorable Mention) : I’m back to my day job as Wikimedia Ukraine’s programs coordinator, and we have a lot of exciting stuff going on – our annual Wikiconference for the Ukrainian community (think Wikimania on the scale of one country🙂), development of our first mass open online course for educators, work on our photo contests Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth, and so much more. Not a lot of time for celebrations left! :)
