In 2022, our journey with Igala Wikipedia began when we submitted a request for its creation on Meta-wiki and commenced contributions on Wikimedia Incubator, marking the initial step towards recognition and preservation of Igala language and culture.
However, it was not until the 2023 Language Acceleration Program, supported by Wikitongues, that our endeavor gained significant momentum. We express our deepest gratitude to the Wikitongues team for selecting Igala as one of the languages for the Language Accelerator Program in 2023. Their support for the revitalization of the Igala language on Wikipedia has been invaluable, leading to a remarkable milestone: the approval of Igala language Wikipedia. This achievement stands as a testament to the dedication and passion for language preservation and revitalization. we will also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Wikimedia Foundation for the support.
Throughout this remarkable journey, the support of numerous individuals were also instrumental in achieving the approval of Igala Wikipedia. Among them were Amir Aharoni, Tochi Precious, Udeh Benedict, Dnshitobu and Nikos Likomitros. whose dedication and efforts laid the groundwork for success. Alongside them, a dedicated team of contributors played a pivotal role in shaping the development and content of Igala Wikipedia.
These volunteers, ranging from experienced editors to enthusiastic newcomers, collaborated tirelessly to create and expand articles, ensuring comprehensive coverage of Igala language, culture, history, traditions among others.
