Highlights from WikiForHumanRights 2024 in Igala Wikimedia Community

Igala Wikimedia Community held an event titled WikiForHumanRights 2024 Campaign, the date for the event was July 13, 2024. The event which took place in Nigeria, the event was a colorful illustration of how regional efforts can influence international human rights campaigns. In addition to serving as a training ground for new Wikipedians, the event marked a significant advancement in the amplification of important human rights topics in Igala Wikipedia.

Empowering New Wikipedians

We had engaging training sessions which aimed at empowering new contributors to contributing to Wikimedia projects. New Wikimedians were introduced to and trained on how to contributte to Igala Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The sessions covered a range of skills from editing and sourcing reliable information and also translating Human Right related articles from English Wikipedia to Igala Wikipedia.

The experienced Wikimedia volunteers and trainers guided the new participants and participants that needed help through hands-on exercises, helping them gain confidence during the event’s edithathon. At the end of the day, participants had developed a solid foundation in Igala Wikipedia editing, ready to contribute valuable content.

A Focus on Human Rights Through Translation

A key highlight of the event was the translation drive, which focused on translating vital human rights topics from English Wikipedia to Igala Wikipedia. The initiative aimed to make Human Right Related Topics more accessible to a broader audience in the Igala Speaking Community.

The topics for the translation drive included:

  1. Agriculture in Nigeria: This section addressed the impact of agricultural practices on human rights and how sustainable farming can contribute to food security and fair labor practices.
  2. Environment and Waste Management in Nigeria: This translation focused on the intersection of environmental sustainability and human rights, highlighting the importance of effective waste management and environmental protection.
  3. Water Supply and Sanitation in Nigeria: Ensuring access to clean water and proper sanitation is a fundamental human right. This section detailed the challenges and solutions related to water supply and sanitation.
  4. Water in Nigeria: Expanding on the previous topic, this translation provided a comprehensive overview of water resources in Nigeria, including issues of accessibility and equity.

Bridging Local Knowledge with Global Platforms

The translations was more about bridging the content gap about Human Right Topics on Igala Wikipedia. By translating these crucial topics, Igala Wikimedia Community is ensuring that information about human rights is both accessible and relevant to the Igala speakers.

Participants during the translation drive worked diligently to provide accurate, culturally sensitive translations. This collaborative effort was a proof to the power of local voices in shaping the global conversation on human rights.

Fostering a Culture of Collaboration and Advocacy

After a celebration of the new Wikipedians and a review of the day’s accomplishments, the event came to an end. It was obvious that WikiForHumanRights 2024 had encouraged cooperation and advocacy among the Igala community in addition to providing people with the means to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
