The “WikiForHumanRights 2024 Campaign in Tanzania” aims to foster greater awareness, understanding, and engagement at the intersection of human rights and sustainability. Our mission is to empower Tanzanian communities by providing accessible, accurate, and localized knowledge on human rights issues, with a particular emphasis on their connection to building a sustainable future. Through the promotion of awareness, education, and action, this campaign, in collaboration with the Global WikiEducation Initiative and Wikimedians Of Tabora, seeks to inspire individuals to take proactive steps towards promoting human rights, environmental conservation, and sustainable development in Tanzania.

Impact and Activities

The campaign focused on themes such as the right to a healthy environment, tree planting initiatives, and regional writing contests, aiming to catalyze positive change and encourage active participation in creating a future that upholds both human rights and environmental sustainability. The key activities included:

  1. Webinar and Campaign Launch: Sharing local campaign efforts to build climate change/environment words and knowledge in Swahili . This event marked the official launch of the 2024 campaign.
  2. Editathons, Photowalks, and Writing Contests: Engaged Wikimedians from participating communities on Swahili Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons through editathons, photowalks, and writing contests. Participants from different communities mobilized to engage in capacity-building sessions organized globally and regionally.
  3. Learning and Closing Event: Organized a physical event to share the work done, skills acquired, and impact created in the community.

The target participants were members of the Global WikiEducation Initiative and Wikimedians Of Tabora, as well as new editors and volunteers who showed interests in the relevant themes.

Results and Learning Outcomes

Through this project, we hoped to learn the following:

  1. Effective Community Engagement Strategies:
    • Understand which community engagement strategies are most effective in mobilizing participation and fostering meaningful dialogue around human rights and sustainability issues.
  2. Partnership Development and Collaboration:
    • Gain insights into best practices for developing and maintaining partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders, particularly in the context of implementing collaborative initiatives related to environmental conservation and community development.

Overall, the “WikiForHumanRights 2024 Campaign in Tanzania” seeks to create a lasting impact by empowering communities, fostering collaboration, and promoting sustainable development and human rights awareness.
