Since 2022, the Movement Strategy Implementation Grants (MSIG) have been a key resource for communities across the Wikimedia movement, enabling the community members to carry out important work aligned with the Movement Strategy Recommendations. These grants have supported various initiatives, including research and piloting Hubs, hosting community meet-ups, translating vital documentation, and fostering participation in Movement-wide spaces. Additionally, these grants have provided a platform for experimenting with leadership and capacity-building strategies, enabling communities to take charge of their roles within the movement.
As we reflect on the progress made, it’s clear that the Movement Strategy Implementation Grants have played a pivotal role in bringing Movement Strategy closer to communities. These grants have allowed innovative governance, leadership, and community engagement approaches, creating a more inclusive and participatory environment.
In July 2024, the Movement voted on a Movement Charter that laid the foundations for movement governance. The Wikimedia Foundation recognizes the importance of investing in governance, and in achieving this goal, we are committed to supporting Hub initiatives that enhance equitable decision-making.
What’s Next? Adjustments and a Renewed Focus.
As we move forward, we want to share some important updates that will shape the future of Movement Strategy. The Community Development team is working closely with Movement Communications and other teams within the Wikimedia Foundation on MSIG and Hubs support. This collaboration will ensure that our support is both coordinated and holistic, addressing the diverse needs of communities across the movement. We also have the constant support and strategic advice available from the Community Resilience and Sustainability team, further strengthening our efforts.
Moving forward, a key area of focus will be on Hubs, which are seen as a crucial component of future Movement structures and governance. Movement Strategy grant funding and support will be focused on these initiatives to provide more significant support for Hubs. We are updating the application procedures and criteria to reflect this shift in focus. Stay tuned for updates on Meta-Wiki!
For those who have previously applied for smaller grants to support ambassadors, translations, leadership development, and similar activities, we will direct them to other funding opportunities within the existing Wikimedia funds, such as the Rapid and General Support Funds.
Providing clarity and guidelines
A crucial part of support for Hub initiatives in their different phases is establishing guidelines for piloting Hubs. The guidelines will offer governance, staff, funding, and services parameters, with enough flexibility to adapt to different contexts and needs. The Community Development team will work on refreshing these guidelines, building upon existing guidelines, Movement Charter Drafting Committee documentation, and practical learning from Hub initiatives. The team plans to co-create with those currently involved in Hub work and then will share this on Meta for any public feedback.
Ongoing Support and Communication
If you have questions regarding current MSIG grants and support for Hub initiatives, we encourage you to contact Beverly Jiang, Jessica Stephenson, and Sailesh Patnaik from the Community Development team at strategy2030@wikimedia.org. We will continue conversations with many ongoing grantees to understand the work better and discuss potential steps going forward.
We are excited about our direction and look forward to working closely with all of you as we build a stronger, more equitable movement.
