Like many developing countries, Ghana grapples with environmental and ocean pollution, one of the country’s major problems. Daily activities by individuals contribute to the destruction of the environment and the ocean, polluting them with dire consequences for the planet.
As Wikipedia launched its annual campaign, WikiForHumanRights, aimed at ensuring universal access to information and the right to environmental health, we had the opportunity to contribute to its agenda by creating Awareness of Environmental and Ocean Pollution in Ghana.
This we did through a video and photo walk project.
The video documentary highlights the problems of pollution accompanied by a narration emphasizing its dangers to the planet and the people living in it. We also participated in a beach cleanup organized by the non-profit organization “Plastic Punch,” where we produced a second video interviewing volunteers. They shared their perspectives on the dangers of plastic pollution in the ocean and its impact on marine mammals.
The photo walk and video shoot were taken in various locations in Accra, the capital of Ghana. These locations face environmental challenges, which is why they were chosen to advocate for awareness. Other locations have had a positive impact, where trees were planted to help mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.
The final part of our project involved collating photos depicting how human actions have polluted the environment and the ocean due to irresponsible acts. The videos and images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under the “WikiForHumanRights 2024 in Ghana” We shared the video on our Wikimedia Community platform and social media channels, encouraging members to distribute it across their networks for broader coverage.
