In a community aimed at fostering member’s growth and development, the IG Wiki Commons Hub proudly presents the IG Community Spotlight 2.0 with a focus on the Winners of Wiki Loves Africa 2024 in the Igbo Community.
Background
The first edition of the IG Community Spotlight was held in April 2024, with the team noting in a Diff article: “before the end of 2024, or perhaps in 2025 there will be another opportunity to meet again for another edition of the spotlight event” and barely two months later, in July 2024, the second edition was held, showcasing the Hub’s dedication to keeping the community engaged.
Acknowledging our Special guests
Although the event was a success, it was held in the absence of our special guests, M.Wasiul Bahar Wasi (Project Lead-Project Korikath and his brother, Mrb Rafi (Founder, NDEC WERT) both from the Wikimedia Bangladesh who couldn’t attend the event due to the crisis in their country as at the period the event was held.
During the opening remark, Mr. Wilson the Community lead for IG Wiki Commons Hub, shared insights into their work, interests and achievements. He encouraged attendees to keep our colleagues in Bangladesh and other parts of the world in their thoughts, reminding everyone that by our shared purpose and involvement in contributing to the movement from different parts of the world, we are connected together in the Wikimedia movement as one entity.
Highlights of the event include:
- The event unfolded with an opening remark by Mr. Wilson who emphasized the unity of contributors within the Wikimedia Movement. His words gave the attendees a sense of motivation for their journey in the movement and set the mood for the day.
- Trivia session with a quiz to test attendee’s knowledge and give everyone a chance to unwind.
- Panel session with invited guests who shared tips with prospective winners and community members on best practices with regards to self-development, consistency, seeking support etc.
- Community update session to keep members abreast of happenings and developments in the movement worldwide.
- Q&A session, giving attendees an opportunity to ask questions and share learning and experience.
- Announcement of the Trivia result.
Excerpts from the panel sessions with the Wiki Loves Africa 2024 winners
Kwesike Nkwachukwu Nuria (User:Dagentle): Winner video category. (1st time Winner Wiki Loves Africa Video category from the Igbo Wikimedia user group) He emphasized the importance of finding your niche. He gave an instance from the contest, that because everyone was into photography doesn’t mean he has to join them, rather, he had to focus on where his passion and strength lies, which is photography. He advised community members to follow their passion and improve on it while utilizing whatever device they have to get what they want or improvise. He left them with these last words, “Don’t be limited by the devices you have, practice and improve on your skills”
Mkpongonyong Albert John (User:Albertoblaq ): He highlighted the benefits of being focused and dedicated. He advised members to ask questions and reach out to community members for help and guidance in contributing to Wikimedia projects. He encouraged them to take up opportunities and be open to learning new things, stressing that “whatever you learn is never a waste”.
Franklin IfeanyiChukwu Diala (User:Frankincense Diala): He stressed the importance of self-development and advised community members to take courses that will up skill their knowledge on their interested fields.
