Utilizing Wikimedia Commons as a Repository for Open Educational Resources in Indonesia

Wikimedians are familiar with Wikimedia Commons as a storage hub for media files used in other Wikimedia projects. However, Creative Commons Indonesia (CCID) has a slightly different perspective. With support from the Wikimedia Foundation in the Adicita Project, CCID introduced Wikimedia Commons to educators in Indonesia as a ‘home’ to store their educational content, open educational resources.

During the six weeks of May and June 2023, CCID conducted open educational resources (OER) training. The training was conducted in collaboration with SEAMEO SEAMOLEC and was entirely held online. Thirty-six participants actively took part in the training, using SEAMOLEC’s e-learning platform. Throughout the six weeks of training, participants were provided with diverse materials, including an introduction to Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks.

The OER training involved various types of tasks for the participants to complete, namely individual tasks, group tasks, and a final project. Participants had the option to publish their tasks on Wikimedia Commons or the Sumber Belajar SEAMOLEC. Interestingly, the majority of participants chose to upload their tasks on Wikimedia Commons. For the individual tasks, participants were asked to upload photos and photo collections (referred to as collections by Creative Commons) related to their respective regions, which must have educational values (selfies are not allowed). Several important components were assessed in this tasks, including the title of the work, description of the work, and categories. Could the participants provide appropriate titles? Could they describe the content of the photos correctly? Could they assign the right categories?

For the final project, participants were required to create teaching materials according to their expertise. Before uploading to Wikimedia Commons, the facilitators checked all the materials used in the participants’ works to ensure compliance with the OER Canvas they created. If adaptations were made, were the chosen licenses appropriate? Were they compatible? Only after verification, the works could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

In the end, three best participants were selected to receive the main prizes and mini-grants for doing OER workshops in their respective regions. The three winners are:

  1. Imam Dwi Ajitama from SD Negeri Proyonanggan 05 Batang, Central Java, with the final project titled “Sistem Tata Surya” (The Solar System).
  2. Reza Mega Ardhilia from SMP Negeri Unggulan 4 Pulau Morotai, North Maluku, with the final project titled “Mikro Modul – Melintasi Dunia ROTASI – Memahami Perputaran dalam Matematika Kelas IX” (Micro Module – Crossing the ROTATION World – Understanding Rotation in 9th Grade Mathematics).
  3. Achmad Ardiansyah from SMP Negeri 02 Rembang Pasuruan, East Java, with the final project titled “LKPD Pengukuran dan Jenis Sudut” (Student Worksheets on Measurement and Types of Angles).

In addition to individual tasks on Wikimedia Commons, the training participants were also assigned group tasks to create books on Wikibooks. Each group, consisting of six participants, created a book where they could choose topics related to copyright, Creative Commons licenses, or open educational resources. The six books created by the participants in Indonesian Wikibooks can be accessed at the following links.

Three-best participants have also finished conducting workshops in their regions in Central Java, North Maluku and East Java. In their workshop, participants were also introduced to Wikimedia Commons to search for open content. They try to download 1 piece of content to prove that all works on Wikimedia Commons are free to use. In addition, participants also tried to contribute to Wikimedia Commons and contributed one photo on a local topic. It is hoped that from this workshop the participants will get to know Wikimedia Commons as a place to find teaching materials that are safe and free from copyright infringement. In conclusion, Creative Commons Indonesia would like to express deep gratitude to our collaborating partners in this training: SEAMEO SEAMOLEC, Wikimedia Indonesia, and Gimpscape ID. In the long term, we hope that this program can create a sustainable OER ecosystem in Indonesia.
