On September 9, 2023, Caner (User:Kurmanbek) and I launched a project called Wikimedia Japan-Türkiye Friendship. This project aims to enrich Wikimedia contents about Türkiye and Japan and strengthen the collaboration between the two communities.
Before the launch
We met at Wikimania 2023 and talked about student Wikimedian communities, especially Üsküdar University Wikipedia Student Club in Turkey, which I had introduced in a Diff post “University student Wikipedian communities around the world.” We soon became friends and promised to collaborate after the event.

We had a conversation with Eugene Ormandy, who participated in Wikimania from our sister country, Japan, which is geographically far from Türkiye but has close ties. We met with him at a session and he asked questions about Üsküdar University Wikipedia Student Club. I told him about the establishment process of the club and I talked about the Istanbul Bilgi University Wikipedia Student Club, which will soon be established at my own university. I also mentioned that we can carry out joint projects with the Student Wikipedian Community at Waseda University Tokyo at their own university by declaring BİLGİ Wikipedia Student Club as a sister club and that this will be a very good example of the “Diversity, Collaboration and the Future” theme of Wikimania 2023. I will contact Eugene, who is very warm to this idea, after the establishment of BİLGİ Wikipedia Student Club in September 2023, and we will start the sister club process.

What’s next?
As we mentioned in our message, we plan to have various activities. Especially, I am looking forward to have an editathon to celebrate 100th anniversary of the Japan-Turkish friendship.
