I am thrilled to share the latest update about the commencement of the PunjabWiki Education Program, an inspiring initiative aimed at empowering underprivileged students through knowledge-sharing on Wikipedia and its sister projects. This transformative project has taken root in Government Senior Secondary School, Mahla Kalan, Punjab (India), marking a pivotal effort to provide a unique learning experience tailored to the needs of underprivileged students. Beyond the conventional scope of academic education, the vision of the initiative is to cultivate a holistic environment that fosters the spirit of contribution, collaboration, and digital literacy.

The program is strategically designed to cater to students facing multiple challenges, including financial constraints, limited access to electronic devices, struggles with internet connectivity, and a lack of guidance from mentors or parents with a sufficient educational background. Often hailing from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, these students grapple with obstacles that hinder their access to essential resources for academic and personal growth. Recognizing these barriers, the initiative endeavors to bridge the gap by providing a learning experience that not only imparts traditional academic knowledge but also instills a sense of contribution, collaboration, and digital literacy.

At the heart of this endeavor is the establishment of the Wiki Club, a dynamic group consisting of 13 students from the 9th and 11th standards. This club stands as a symbol of the program’s unwavering commitment to empowering these individuals. Currently guided by the former Wikimedia-in-Residence, Jagseer S Sidhu, and with valuable support from school authorities, including Gurmeet Singh Aulakh, School Head, Narinder Kaur, Co-head, and Amandeep Kaur, Project Lead (School), the club is a testament to the collaborative effort to uplift and inspire these students on their educational journey.

By guiding them through an enriching journey of exploration within Wikipedia and its sister projects, the initiative not only addresses immediate barriers but also equips students with the skills necessary to actively participate in the digital age. This approach fosters a spirit of empowerment and inclusion, nurturing a sense of confidence and capability among these students.

As these students embark on their journey to explore the vast expanse of Wikipedia and its sister projects, they are not merely learning how to consume information but are actively discovering the art of contributing to these platforms. The program aims to instill in them a sense of agency, encouraging them to be creators of knowledge, breaking barriers, and expanding their horizons in the ever-evolving landscape of the digital world. The PunjabWiki Education Program is not just about education; it’s about transformation, breaking down barriers, and empowering the next generation of contributors and thinkers.
