Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2024 are open until December 18! Apply now for a full or partial scholarship to attend Wikimania in person in Poland.
Wikimania is the annual global gathering of Wikimedia contributors that takes place in person and online. This year’s theme will be “Collaboration of the Open”—a celebration of the ways we work together, in the open and for the larger open movement, to bring free knowledge to the world.
Wikimania will take place at either the end of July or the beginning of August. We are working on finalizing the details to be able to announce the exact dates before the end of the 2023 calendar year. We understand that people are excited and eager to book for the event and will confirm as soon as we can so that people can organize accommodation, travel and start any visa preparations.
In the meantime, we decided to open the Scholarship process earlier this year, so that Wikimedians needing visas for Poland have enough time to apply.
Scholarships for Wikimania 2024 are available in different types for travelling to Poland:
- Full scholarship: travel, accommodation, and registration are provided;
- Partial scholarship: accommodation and registration are provided.
All scholarship recipients are covered by the Wikimedia Foundation Travel Insurance Policy. As during Wikimania Singapore, scholars will be asked to volunteer 4-6 hours over the course of Wikimania, with the option to volunteer more time if desired.
What’s new this year?
This year we are introducing a couple of changes to the scholarship model:
- To ensure fairness in the scholarship review process, we will be reviewing volunteer applications separately from those of paid affiliate staff. Paid affiliate staff are still eligible for the scholarship, but their contributions will be considered against other staff so as not to compare the contributions of paid staff with those of volunteers.
- Additionally, given hubs’ natural understanding of their local communities we decided to include them in the scholarship process: after the scholarship subcommittee publishes scholarship decisions, we will allow for each currently active Wikimedia Hub to delegate 1-3 additional applicants to receive a scholarship. This will help ensure regional diversity amongst scholarship recipients and will allow the subcommittee to benefit from Hubs’ regional knowledge. After the scholarship decisions are published, we will allow each currently active Wikimedia Hub to delegate 1-3 people of their choosing, to account for diversity in the specific region.
