On 20 January 2024, Wikimedians from Japan and Turkey had an online meeting for Wikimedia Japan-Türkiye Friendship.
Topics
1 Student Wikipedian Community in Waseda University Tokyo
First, Eugene Ormandy introduced the activities of the Student Wikipedian Community in Waseda University Tokyo. Eugene shared the editathons it held, international projects and podcast referring the report of the club on Japanese Diff.
2 Istanbul Bilgi University Wikipedia Student Club
Then, Caner introduced the history of Wikimedia Japan-Türkiye Friendship and the activities of the Istanbul Bilgi University Wikipedia Student Club. Though it was founded in September 2023, it has held many events such as the Japan themed editathon, collaboration with other student Wikipedia clubs in Turkey, and discussion with CEE Youth Wikimedians.
3 How can we collaborate?
Finally, Eugene Ormandy shared three ways to collaborate.
The first way is an online editathon week like the Wikimedia Japan-Malaysia Friendship Editathon 15-21 October 2023. In this system, we don’t gather and just edit the articles. So it is very easy to implement.
The second is holding events separately like Japan-Türkiye editathons in October and November 2023. Though we couldn’t connect via Zoom (mainly because of the time zone), those events were successful.
The third is simultaneous editathons like the Wikimedia Japan-Malaysia Friendship ASEAN-Japan 50 Editathon. In this system, we start the editathons separately and sometimes gather via Zoom. It is very interesting because we can communicate directly, but the time difference matters (the difference between Japan and Malaysia is only 1 hour).
Achievements
Through the discussions on the meeting, we decided some topics.
- Holding an online editathon week between 5 to 11 February 2024.
- Creating a Wikipedia article about Turkish Japanese Science and Technology University on Japanese Wikipedia
- Holding a photo walk in spring
Acknowledgement
I would like to thank all the participants. It was very interesting to learn about various Wikimedia stories. I hope we collaborate more.
