The #WikiforHumanRights project aims to raise awareness about environmental issues among the Hausa-speaking community. Specifically, it focuses on topics like environmental protection and pollution reduction. The campaign involves translating articles into Hausa, covering individual and group rights, natural rights, and civil and political rights. This initiative is crucial because it addresses the lack of information available in Hausa and the underrepresentation of these topics on Hausa Wikipedia.

So far, the campaign has resulted in the creation of 530 articles and the editing of 3.24k articles. A dedicated group of 53 editors has contributed to this effort, adding 8.18m bytes of content, 10.5k references, and achieving 346k article views and total edits of 610 Wikidata items. See the project’s Dashboard.

Physical Training Workshops in Zaria and Kano

The campaign kicks off with face-to-face workshops held in Zaria and Kano. These gatherings bring together editors, community members, and human rights advocates. Participants engage in hands-on activities, learning about Wikipedia editing, Wikidata, and the significance of human rights content. These workshops foster collaboration and skill development, bridging the information gap in the Hausa language.

Online Training and Writing Contest

Following the physical workshops, the campaign transitions to online training. Participants continue their learning remotely, accessing resources and tutorials virtually. A highlight of this phase is the writing contest. Editors are encouraged to create or enhance articles related to human rights, environmental justice, and social equality.
