Wiki for Human Right (WFHR)2024, Oau Osun Nigeria physical meet up

The campaign held on the 10th of August 2024 concentrated on raising awareness on critical human right related issues related to sustainability. Such as right to a healthy environment. Participants worked on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikivoyage and they focused on creating and editing articles related to water and agriculture in Nigeria. The campaign is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. The National event was led by @bukky658 and @kemi Makinde. The event was spotlighted by Dr Abayomi Oyewale, a research fellow at the institute of ecology and environmental studies, Obafemi Awolowo Universtiy. Who talked about how passionate volunteers can advocate for environmental sustainability.

Enabling new editors

We introduced new editors to Wikipedia and its sister project and had training sessions on:

  • The five pillars of Wikipedia
  • Neutal point of view and verifiability
  • Wiki linking and citations

We had series of trainings which covered a range of skills from editing and sourcing reliable information on Human right related articles on Wikipedia. The experienced Wikimedia volunteers and trainers guided the new participants and participants that needed help through hands-on exercises, adding image to articles and helped them gain confidence during the event’s edithathon. At the end, participants had basic knowledge of editing techniques on Wikipedia and uploading images to Commons.

Partner’s Spotlight

Our partner, Dr Abayomi Oyewale, a research fellow at the institute of Ecology and Environmental studies discussed on the following areas:

  • Introduced participants to climate change and the importance of advocating for climate.
  • He talked about the various activites involved in creating a sustainable environment
  • He talked about the various challenges facing the environment and some solutions to tackle this climate issues which involve afforestation, proper water drainage management etc
  • He highlighted the areas of service as a climate change advocate

Then the Question and answer session where participants had the opportunity to point out areas where they are confused. They also talked about their individual innovative ideas to tackle this challenges.

Conclusion

A major highlight of the event was concentrating on specific topics which enabled participants contribute to the area of focus. The topics of focus are

  • Water in Nigeria; Ensuring access to clean water and proper sanitation is a fundamental human right. This section detailed the challenges and solutions related to water supply and sanitation
  • Agriculture in Nigeria: This section addressed the impact of agricultural practices on human rights and how sustainable farming can contribute to food security and fair labor practices
  • Proper Sanitation: Proper sanitation is a fundamental human right and the section discussed on the challenges and solutions to Sanitation in Nigeria.
