Wikimania is celebrating its 20th year with its first-ever edition in East Africa, and you are warmly invited! Whether in person or online, we would like you to join us in commemorating 20 years of global gatherings that strengthen the way we create and share free knowledge.
For those interested in attending the conference in Nairobi, the Core Organizing Team is launching scholarship applications early this year. Our hope is to make travel arrangements as smooth as possible for accepted scholars.

Brought to you by a team of Wikimedians from across the East Africa region, the theme of Wikimania 2025 will be “Wikimania@20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability.” which seeks to celebrate the milestones and impact of our movement while paving way for discussions around strategies and initiatives that ensure the sustainability of Wikimedia projects and inclusivity in the movement.
The conference will happen from 6-9 August, with pre-conference activities also being planned on 5 August. More details about the program and venue will be shared soon.
Application details
We encourage you to start working on your scholarship application now. Applications will be evaluated based on your involvement and engagement in promoting the resilience and sustainability of our movement –whether it is in online or offline activities. Please make sure you detail your contributions so far to the Wikimedia movement, focusing on the impact of those contributions and supporting your points with links where possible. Wikimedians from the East Africa region, as well as Wikimedians with extended user rights, are in particular encouraged to apply–we hope to be able to facilitate skills sharing within and across regions through this year’s event.
Scholarships will cover travel, accommodation and registration. As in previous years, scholars will be asked to volunteer 4-6 hours over the course of Wikimania, with the option to volunteer more time if desired. All scholarship recipients will be covered by the Wikimedia Foundation Travel Insurance Policy.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in March.
