On 24 October 1945, the Charter of the United Nations came into force, which marked the foundation of the United Nations (UN); therefore, the date of 24 October every year is commemorated as United Nations Day. As the UN turns 75 this year, the Wikimedia community was inspired to commemorate this anniversary by enriching Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects with content on UN-related topics through a writing campaign named Wiki for UN that run from 24–31 October.
Wiki for UN in a nutshell
Wiki for UN was conceived with the primary goals of sharing knowledge about the UN’s organisational structure and field of work in multiple languages, raising awareness about the activities and programmes that the organisation carries out throughout the world and laying grounds for more thorough coverage of topics related to the UN in the future. The campaign was supported by a bunch of Wikimedia affiliates — namely, Shared Knowledge, Wikimedians for Sustainable Development, Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia, Wikimedia Russia, Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group, Wikimedia Community of Tatar language User Group and Wikimedians of Bashkortostan User Group — and its start was purposely set on the United Nations Day.
The outreach to specific language communities was envisioned through coordinated localised initiatives, although interested participants could contribute in their language even without it. The editing was aided by article lists compiled on ten thematic areas with a total of 380 articles. There were lists on topics related to the organisation’s history, charter, resolutions, organs, offices and departments, programmes and specialised agencies, peacekeeping operations, proclaimed international years and important people, as well as an overview of general topics.
Wiki for UN concluded with 12 participants creating or improving 170 Wikipedia articles in Macedonian, Malay, Arabic, Bashkir and English in addition to improving 72 Wikidata items.
