Wikimedia Promotion in Akure: Increasing literacy and Documenting cultural heritage

Wikimedia Promotion in Akure was a project sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation aimed to premier the first Wikimedia training in Akure and also to document cultural heritage of the town on Wikipedia and it’s sister projects. It was targeted towards laying a solid foundation and promotion of Wikimedia products amongst youths in Ondo State.

The project held between 13th of May to 17th of June was led by Tesleemah and it kicked start with a physical training on 13th of May, 2023 at Federal college of Agriculture auditorium with 60 participants in attendance. at the training, participants who were majorly new editors were introduced to creating Wikipedia articles, creating wikdata items and uploading notable places in Akure on Wikipedia.

The 1st online training was organized on 30th of May, 2023 for participants who are not within the proximity of Akure and are absent at the launching of the program to benefit through live edit. The project lead Tesleemah introduced the online encyclopedia to the participants and creation of articles on Wikipedia facilitated by Ibja055 and Taoheedah trained the participants how to translate to Yoruba Wikipedia. they were also trained extensively on how to Upload pictures facilitated by Taofeeq Abdulkareem on Wikicommons and how to create Wikidata items was facilitated by Abdullahaalaba

The 2nd online training held on 4th of June, 2023 served as a revision and follow up, the facilitators attended to the concerns and questions of the participants pertaining to Wikimedia and it’s sister projects.

To wrap the project up, A final training was held at Millennium College of Health Technology, Auditorium. Akure, Ondo State where about 50 participants attended, they expressed their satisfaction and joy in contributing towards documenting Akure and notable people and places on Wikipedia.

At the end of the project, the contribution according to statistics and outreach dashboard indicated that Over 500 articles were edited on Wikipedia, Over 240 images were uploaded on Wikicommons and 200 wikidata items were created. the project has not only enhanced the digital literacy of the participants but it has also amplified the visibility and accessibility of Akure on a global scale thereby bridging the information gap on Wikipedia.
