Post-writing activities of the author of “City Revitalization with Wikipedia”

Miyuki Date (User: 漱石の猫), who published “City Revitalization with Wikipedia : let’s create a local encyclopedia together!” (ウィキペディアでまちおこし) from Kinokuniya Co. Ltd. in December 2023, wrote on the media platform “note”, about her post-publication activities and her process of writing for the Japanese edition of Diff.

A Japanese librarian and educator, Ms. Date is a Wikipedian who edits Wikipedia herself, and at the same time organizes the Wikipedia edit-a-thon “Wikipedia Town” in various locations, accumulating experience from more than 100 events in six years. This book is a compilation of the knowledge and experience she has gained and published as a guidebook for those who want to become familiar with Wikipedia. The practically useful “Wikipedia Editing Manual” linked from the QR code at the end of the book can be updated in a timely manner, so the information will not become outdated over the years.

However, the episodes in the book were carefully selected, and there were many fascinating events and episodes that were left out of the book. After the publication of the book, the author has been invited as a lecturer to Wikipedia Towns held in various parts of Japan, where she continues to meet and experience new people. So, starting in 2024, she has decided to introduce those episodes that were omitted from the book and her learning and reflections from new events on the Japanese version of Diff.

Compared to “City Revitalization with Wikipedia,” which was written for general readers who have never edited Wikipedia or joined Wikipedia Town, Diff is mainly an information exchange space for Wikimedia editors, so it is written from the perspective of a slightly more experienced reader, but does not use difficult terms such as those used in technical books. It will be useful for readers who really want to try Wikipedia editing and utilization workshops such as Wikipedia Town, and for Wikipedians who think that offline events are a bit of a mystery. Ms. Date introduces Diff by saying that in addition to her own Diff article, various other Wikipedians share information about their own efforts, and you can learn a lot by reading various articles about Diff. Some of her articles have been translated into English and read by Wikipedians abroad.
