JOIN US for a Wikipedia workshop on #InternationalWomensDay and help add information to Wiki articles on Scotland’s Suffragettes and other women activists!
You’ll be working with us to redress Wikipedia’s gender bias & content gap/s. We consider this #knowledgeactivism – and we need your help!
This online Workshop is hosted by Women’s History Scotland, Wikimedia UK & your friendly Protests & Suffragettes team. We’ll be creating or improving Wikipedia articles on suffrage activists from every region of Scotland – focusing on people who feature in our Education Packs on Scotland’s Suffragette History (and our Suffragette Trumps cards).
It will include short talks on Scottish suffrage history from WHS & special guests, AND P&S will be opening up our massive digital archive on Scotland’s Suffrage/ttes for all to use during the workshop.
––> It’s FREE
––> ALL WELCOME – No experience needed! Training provided by WikiUK and P&S
WHY EDIT WIKIPEDIA?
Wikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles. Only 19% of biographies on English Wikipedia are about women. Women are not a minority and we can #BreakTheBias in the lack of stories currently shared on the open web. This event will focus on improving the representation of inspiring women who fought for #VotesForWomen in Scotland online.
WHAT YOU WILL DO?
We’ll be focusing on improving, expanding, and creating articles about Suffragists, Suffragettes, Suffrage organisations, and protests across Scotland.
This is Protests&Suffragettes 6th Wiki Workshop with Wikimedia UK, and our first one partnering with Women’s History Scotland. During previous events, Wikipedia articles relating to Glasgow’s Suffragettes, 1915 Rent Strike organisers, and other Scottish women activists were edited and created.
–> PLEASE DO create a Wikipedia account in advance of the day (see LINKS below for more HOW TO WIKI).
We’ll also post some ‘How To’ materials on P&S/WHS socials (listed below), for those who’d like to get a headstart!
DETAILS
Our workshop will be held over Zoom, with the link & password sent by email in advance to anyone who signs up. We’ll spend time learning how to edit Wikipedia, and then we’ll be creating and improving other articles (while staying on the zoom call), with expert help on hand and time for breaks. We’ll also have two lightning talks about suffrage activism from guest speakers.
The training will be led by Scotland Wikimedia Coordinator Dr Sara Thomas from Wikimedia UK.
This event is part of P&S’ ongoing project ‘Celebrating Scotland’s Suffragettes‘. Help us highlight the gallus women behind Scotland’s radical history as we create engaging resources for young people across Scotland: https://protests-suffragettes.company.site/
